I wasn’t being modest. I really have no clue when it comes to the culinary arts. Luckily, Katarina knows exactly what she’s doing. She manages to pick out ingredients that I have no idea what to do with. Items that would just be languishing in my cupboards, without her here.

“The trick is finding flavors that work together.” She gestures to the walnuts and prosciutto. I had no idea I had these things in my kitchen, and I feel slightly mystified by my own house.

If I bought them, I have no recollection of it. Of course, that doesn’t seem entirely impossible. Every now and then, I’ll swear that I’m going to start acting like a grown up and cook real food at home. I pick up miscellaneous things at the store, with no idea what I’m going to use them for, and end up surrendering when I remember - I don’t know how to cook.

But they don’t look familiar, not at all. I have a feeling that Katarina’s been stocking the kitchen while I’m at work. I’m not upset, of course, almost..amazed.

“You only need one or two main flavors, then one or two neutral flavors to act as the base. Then the rest is just seasoning.”

She’s saying it like it’s the easiest thing in the world and I can’t help but smile. Is this woman for real? She hands me a packet of fettuccine and a pot while she chops the garlic that was hiding at the bottom of my pantry.

As we cook together, a strange feeling overcomes me. It’s a warmth creeping through my chest and making its way into my bones.

The sensation rests somewhere between comfort and excitement. I’ve never felt like this with a woman before but I think I know what the feeling is.

I don’t dare say its name.
